- What is the inspiration behind Kureta?
Kureta is inspired by the simplicity of nature, the purity of the elements, and the art of Japanese craftsmanship. The concept tells a story of cooking with flame, heat, and charcoal, drawing a connection to the fiery volcanic lands of New Zealand.
- Why is Kureta Japanese-inspired?
The Japanese influence aligns with global hospitality trends that favour authentic, artisanal, and experience-driven dining. Kureta’s vision is to offer an unconventional Teppan House that honours the elements - bringing together the southern oceans and volcanic lands of New Zealand with the precision and elegance of Japanese culinary tradition. This fusion creates a unique offering that resonates with guests seeking mindful, balanced, and uplifting experiences.
- What was the creative vision behind the interiors?
The interiors are designed to reflect Japanese craftsmanship and natural simplicity. Materials like burnt timber (yakisugi), hammered bronze, and distressed leather evoke a tactile, elemental feel. The design balances raw textures with refined finishes, creating a space that feels intimate, atmospheric, and artisanal - a physical extension of the culinary philosophy. The word Kureta also translates to crater, again symbolizing the volcanic presence here in Aotearoa and comes through in the crockery selection and subtle brand identity through menus and tactile experiences.
- How would you describe the dining experience?
Kureta offers a culinary journey that is balanced, mindful, and uplifting. The experience begins at a shared elemental table, where each dish tells a story - crafted with precision and passion. It goes beyond sustenance, fostering a deep connection between the guest, the food, and the natural world.
- What sets Kureta apart from other restaurants in Auckland?
Kureta stands out through its elemental concept, Japanese craftsmanship, and integration of New Zealand’s natural purity. Located at JW Marriott Auckland, it combines Teppanyaki tradition with an omakase-style journey that takes centre stage. With the use of local ingredients, premium aged products displayed in dry-aging fridges, sustainable sourcing, and a design-led experience, Kureta offers something truly distinct.
- How does the design of the space reflect the culinary concept?
The design mirrors the culinary philosophy by using materials that evoke fire, earth, and water - such as charred timber, stone, and metal. The furnishings are minimal to reflect the precision of the experience. The speakeasy nature of the location adds a sense of discovery and drama, creating memorable ‘wow’ moments throughout the teppanyaki and omakase experience.
- How does Kureta honour the art of Japanese craftsmanship?
Kureta honours Japanese craftsmanship through its design language, culinary techniques, and material choices. The use of yakisugi, chiselled typography, and artisanal plating all pay homage to traditional Japanese methods. The chefs are regarded as artisans, transforming raw ingredients into culinary masterpieces with precision and care. The team are masters of Japanese cuisine, with over a decade of experience between them.
- Is Kureta a typical Teppanyaki restaurant?
No. Kureta reimagines the Teppanyaki experience through a modern, elemental lens. While it pays homage to the core techniques of flame and heat, it elevates the concept with locally sourced ingredients, refined presentation through an omakase-style menu, and a deep connection to nature and craft. It’s a Teppan House - not just a grill - designed to offer a mindful and immersive journey.
